RESIDENTIAL BUILDING - 2025
The proposed residential building in Myllypuro is planned on a plot accessible from all directions, creating excellent conditions for circulation, orientation, and connection with the surroundings. By placing the building on the western part of the site, a generous distance to the existing housing is achieved. This provides unobstructed views from the new apartments while also improving the outlook from the surrounding residences – especially towards the shared green courtyard. The added vegetation ties together the currently fragmented green spaces between the neighbouring buildings, forming a cohesive and lively inner courtyard.
On the northern side of the courtyard, a cold structure houses waste management, bicycle parking, storage, and spaces for operation and maintenance. This structure contributes to a funtional courtyard while blocking the unsightly storage units to the north.
The architecture draws inspiration from the character of the surrounding neighborhood, with a material palette that combines concrete and metal. The façade is defined by horizontal layers of the on site cast concrete, echoing the layering to the north.
The apartments are bright and flexible. They open either to large balconies or French balconies that transform the living rooms into hybrid spaces between indoors and outdoors. The floor plans are designed with a strong focus on quality of life and functionality. Bedrooms are oriented to the east, where the morning sun is prioritized. Centrally located wet rooms free up the outer walls for the most used spaces – kitchens and living rooms – which open in several directions and allow for circular movement within the apartments. Living rooms and balconies face west, towards the wooded area where the evening sun filters through the trees, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
